Tips to create a minimalist cute and cozy kids’ bedroom on a budget

When it comes to decorating your kids’ bedroom, cute decor items and furniture are everywhere, and the expenses can quickly add on and turn your project into a very pricy one! But I have some tips for you to decorate your kids’ bedroom on a budget, yet creating a cute and cozy space:

  • Keep it simple and clutter-free: to create a cozy and relaxing atmosphere, keep the furniture and decor mininimal and avoid clutter
  • DIY: if you feel crafty, create your own decor items. Even better, use your children’s crafts and art to decorate their room
  • Repurpose: use furniture and decor items you already own and repurpose them to fit into your space
  • Buy second-handed: search on Marketplace or thrift stores for second-handed furniture and decor items that can help yoo save a lot of money

My son’s cute and cozy minimalist bedroom on a budget and everything I used to decorate it

I put together this bedroom for my son in our rental house when he was about 2 and a half years old. This is actually his first proper bedroom, as before then we coslept and didn’t have a second room in our previous rentals. Let me tell you how excited I was to finally decorate a room just for him!

I wanted this room to have a cozy, cute, and relaxing atmosphere where my son could peacefully sleep, change, and play. Because I didn’t have a big budget, I kept the room minimal, and I repurposed a lot of items I already had, bought a few second-hand things, and DIYed most of the decor.

The other important thing for me was to use natural, non-toxic materials (read more about how to reduce your exposure to toxins here) as much as possible to create a healthy sleep environment. We chose to invest in an organic double mattress that will last many years (hopefully), and good quality, natural bedding.

Let’s dive in and see all this room’s corners and all the products I used!

Walls and window treatments

The walls in this room were already painted in a lovely warm beige color when we moved in. I really love this wall color and the soft contrast with the white trims and doors in the room.

This bedroom has two fair size windows facing east and south, with a lot of natural light shining in all day long. To ensure proper darkening of the room, I installed some blackout curtains using some inexpensive white curtain rods from the dollar store. I opted for some beige blackout curtains that give the room a soft and cozy atmosphere.

Bed

I chose to use a double-size bed for my son’s bedroom because I lie down with him to put him to sleep, and I often spend the second half of the night in bed with him. A double bed is the perfect option in this case because it leaves enough space for both of us to sleep comfortably, which wouldn’t be possible in a toddler or single bed.

For the bed, I repurposed an old wooden futon frame that we were given for free a few years ago. The frame is solid wood and is very sturdy. The futon frame is also fairly low off the ground, which is great for sleeping a toddler and makes the bed safer in case they would roll down. The only negative side of this futon frame is that it doesn’t have a heaboard, which makes sitting up cuddling my son to sleep a bit uncomfortable.

Mattress

I chose an organic latex mattress for my son’s bed. Synthetic materials like memory foam are made of and treated with a number of different chemicals in order to comply with the health and safety standards. Flame retardands, mold and mite treatments, among many others, make these matresses toxic and can negatively affect our health. Therefore, I reccomend choosing and organic mattress for both you and your children.

There are many different options available, at different prices. To chose a good-quality organic matress, make sure your mattress is made of GOLS-certified organic latex and GOTS-certified organic fabrics, and doesn’t contain synthetic materials and flame retardants.

We opted for a Naturelle Juvenile organic mattress, which is relatively cheap for a good organic mattress, and is a great option for children.

Bedding and pillows

Choosing an organic mattress to sleep on is a great step to improve the quality of your children’s sleep and their health, but choosing the right bedding is as well. I always reccomend opting for natural bedding fabrics, such as cotton, linen, and wool. Avoid polyester and other artificial fabrics, and whatever is treated with chemicals and fire retardants! If you can afford it, buy organic bedding.

Good quality beddings, just like a good quality mattress, are an investment that can last many years if treated properly. I personally own just 1 set of sheets, 1 duvet, and 1 duvet cover for each bed. I just wash them and put them right back on when needed and this saves me money and even storage space!

For my son’s bedroom, I chose a cute set of sheets with a fun woodland print made with 100% cotton. I use the fitted sheet all-year-round, and the sheet and pillow cases only in the summer when I don’t use a duvet. I love the design of these sheets because it has neutral colors that go well with the overall look of this bedroom, but it’s fun and the animals are very cute. I bought these sheets at HomeSense and I can’t find them online, but I’ll link some similar options below.

For the winter, I opted for a wool duvet. This duvet is literally the best thing to sleep in and we have the exact same one in our master’s bedroom. It’s 100% natural, breathable, it’s warm but doesn’t make you feel overheated, is machine washable, and comes with ties to secure your duvet cover. I opted for a solid green cotton duvet cover. I love the solid color for a boy’s bedroom bacause it makes the room look very cozy and tidy, and I find it goes perfectly with the color of the walls.

Finally, I chose organic Kapok pillows. These are among my favourite pillows to sleep on. They are soft yet provide proper support, and they are free from harmful chemicals found in synthetic pillows.

Furniture

I kept the furniture in my son’s bedroom very minimal. We have a white 3-drawer dresser that was gifted to us as a baby shower gift. I switched up the knobs with some wooden ones that I had from another IKEA dresser an I really love how it turned out. It was a very simple little makeover! All my son’s clothes fit in the dresser, besides the ones that we hang in the closet, and he can now easily access and pick out his clothes for himself.

I’ve been using the dresser as a changing table as well since my son was born. I added a changing pad with a cute and simple cotton cover that I thrifted.

Next to the dresser, I have a small natural wood folding table where I keep the items I need to change my son, such as wipes, diapers, and diaper cream. I used a small wooden crate tokeep everything organized.

Because I didn’t want to invest in a nightstand, I used an old chair we already had, which turned out perfect because it kinda matches the bed. I placed an old cute swaddle blanket with a woodland print that matches the overall room decor on the chair back. We keep our sound machine, our night light, and alarm clock on the chair, and I added a plant in a cute pot for a bit of color an because we need a plant in every room lol.

I also placed a thrifted wicker basket under the chair with some of my son’s favorite bedtime books.

Decor

We’re finally at the most fun part of decorating a room: the decor!

For the wall, I kept it very simple. I hanged three cute animal shaped plates on one wall. These plates were on clearance for I believe $2 each at our local Atlantic Superstore. I can’t find these online, but I’ll link a couple of cute alternatives down below. To hang the plates, I simply glued a paper clip with hot glue on the back of each plate and hanged them with a small nail in the wall.

Above the nightstand chair, I hanged 3 wooden picture frames with 2 of my son’s drawings (sooo cute!!), and one painting that I made for him. I love how cute and simple these pictures are, and of course they have a sentimental value that makes them super special.

Above the bed, I hanged a name sign that I made myself. I bought a wooden board from the dollar store and painted it green, with some white leaves. I glued on white wooden letters to spell my son’s name out. I really love how this name sign turned out and how it looks in this bedroom, and it was really easy and inexpensive to make.

On the other wall above the bed, I hanged a macrame dream catcher that I made myself as well using some cotton macrame rope. This dream catcher adds some boho notes to the room that I really love.

I love this so much! Unfortunately, most kids’ bedrooms these days are way too cluttered and overstimulating.
