Today we’re learning all about screw length: why it matters and how to measure it correctly. If this sounds a bit boring, I also have a genius hack to easily measure flat head screws with a measuring tape that I’m sure you’ll love!
Why is it important to measure screw length correctly?
Whether you’re working on a DIY project, repairing something, or assembling furniture, measuring the length of a screw correctly is important to achieve a professional, safe, and long-lasting result. For example, if you have some loose screws but need more of the same kind, you will need to measure them to know exactly what size of screws to buy.
Here’s why measuring and choosing the right screw size matters:
1. Ensures a Secure Fit
Using a screw that’s too short may not provide enough grip, leading to weak connections. On the other hand, a screw that’s too long can go through the material and cause damage or instability.
As a rule of thumb, for woodworking, pick a screw that’s long enough to go through the first material and at least two-thirds into the second.
2. Prevents Material Damage
Make sure to avoid screws that are too long for your project! You don’t want to poke through the other side of the material or cause cracking or splitting, ruining the appearance and causing safety hazards.
3. Maintains Structural Integrity
In construction, furniture assembly, or machinery, using the correct screw length ensures that joints and fastenings hold up under stress. The wrong size may lead to loosening over time, compromising safety and durability.
4. Avoids Stripping or Over-Tightening
If you pick a screw that’s too short you might have to over-tighten it, which can strip the threads or weaken the fastening point. If you pick a screw that’s too long, it may not seat properly, leading to an insecure hold.

Using the right screw length from the start prevents rework. If you install the wrong screw, you may have to remove it and find a replacement, which can be frustrating and time-consuming. That’s why measuring your screw length correctly is important!

Understanding screw length: flat- vs round-head screws
The length of a screw is typically measured from the point where the material’s surface will sit to the tip of the screw. However, the starting point depends on the screw head type:
- Flat head screws (countersunk screws): used for furniture, woodworking, drywall, when the screw should sit level with or below the material’s surface, or when countersinking (drilling a recess for the screw head) is necessary. To measure a flat head screw: measure from the very top of the screw head to the tip
- Round, pan, or hex head screws (non-countersunk screws): used when the screw head needs to sit above the surface (for example electrical boxes, decorative hardware), and when a stronger hold is needed without countersinking or weakening a thin or soft material. To measure a round head screw: measure from the bottom of the head to the tip
What tools can you use to measure screw length?
To precisely measure the length of your screws you can use different tools:
1. Ruler or measuring tape
Place the screw flat and measure from the tip to the correct reference point depending on head type (as seen above).
2. Caliper
A caliper provides a more accurate measurement and can measure both the length and diameter of a screw.
3. Screw gauge
Screw gauges help measure both the length and diameter of screws quickly. Some include built-in slots where you can insert the screw for instant measurement.
How to measure screw length jack: a simple way to measure flat-head screws with a measuring tape
Now that we understand how you should measure a screw properly and why we should, let me finally get to the part you came here for!
This is a hack that my 5-year-old came up with when I asked him to measure a screw for me while we were installing our bathroom shelves.
Even though he measured a round head screw like this (we’ll forgive him, he’s 5 after all!), this method only gives you the precise measurement for flat head screws. However, if precision is not critical for your project and a rough measurement works just fine, go ahead and use this hack with any kind of screw!
This method is great for DIYers because it’s super easy and all you need is a measuring tape. No screwing around (no pun intended!!) to hold your screws still while you measure, and no expensive tools required.
Let’s see how you do it! Basically you’re going to use your measuring tape as it was a caliber.
- Take your measuring tape and extend it enough to fit your screw in between the hook (the metal part at the end of the yellow tape) and the edge of the case (the flat black part in the picture below).
- On the back of the tape (the opposite side from the measurement unit markings) position the head of the screw sitting on the edge of the tape case, and the tip of the screw on the metal hook. Make sure that the tip of the screw doesn’t go into the little hole on the hook. To do so, you can position the screw tip on either side (left, right, or front) of the hole, depending on the size and position of the hole on your measuring tape. Let the hook hold the screw in place for you. See the first picture below.
- Flip over your measuring tape and read the measurement that lines up with the edge of the case (just where your screw head is sitting). You have now measured your screw length!
