Why bone broth?
Bone broth is a traditional food of many cultures around the world. It’s one of the ways to make use of animals’ bones and other inedible parts and nourish our bodies with all the nutrients they are rich in, such as collagen, amino acids, calcium, phosphorus and vitamins.
All these nutrients contribute to sustaining healthy bones, joints and skin, keeping the gut healthy and sustaining digestion, lowering inflammation and promoting detoxification. Bone broth can even help sleep better and improve our mood!
Bone broth is a great healing beverage for grown-ups and children, especially when fighting a cold or flu, or to rehydrate the body after having diarrhea.
Bone broth popsicles, really?
Last week my son caught a summer flu which gave him his very first fever and a bunch of annoying cold symptoms. To help him heal and feel better, I let him get plenty of rest and cuddles, and I put on a batch of homemade bone broth (find the recipe here).
I made him a nourishing bone broth soup for dinner and offered warm bone broth to sip throughout the day. Because it’s summer and the weather is hot though, he much preferred to suck on a fresh popsicle than drink warm bone broth. I cannot blame him!
That’s what gave me the idea of making bone broth popsicles. I think it’s a genius trick to consume healing bone broth during the warmer season and still get all its beneficial benefits (read all about it here), while also enjoying a refreshing frozen treat.
I mixed the freshly made bone broth with some fresh fruit to add flavour and precious vitamins and added some honey and ginger for more flavour and for their anti-inflammatory properties.
A refreshing frozen treat with healing and anti-inflammatory properties
As we already covered, bone broth have so many healing properties and can reintegrate essential nutrients and give us strength, especially when fighting a cold or flu, or a stomach bug.
But I wanted to give these popsicles an extra boost and add more healing, anti-inflammatory ingredients.
Ginger is well-known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help aid digestion, reduce nausea, and help fight the flu and common cold.
Raw honey, thanks to all its enzymes and nutrients, is also useful for relieving cold and flu symptoms.
Finally, I chose to add fresh in-season fruit such as watermelon and strawberries. These fruits are rich in minerals and vitamins. In particular, strawberries are a good source of vitamin C, which is helpful to sustain our immune system and fight illness. Of course, adding fruit to these bone broth popsicles also made them more appealing and delicious (perfect for “tricking” kids!).
Ingredients for these bone broth popsicles
- 1 1/2 cups of bone broth
- 5 ounces (150 grams) of watermelon
- 4 ounces (100 grams) of strawberries
- 1 tablespoon of raw honey
- 1 teaspoon (or less) of grated fresh ginger
How to make these bone broth popsicles
- Blend all the ingredients together using a food processor or immersion blender until smooth.
- Pour into (6) popsicle molds.
- Insert popsicle sticks and freeze in upright position until hard (about 4 hours)
Notes
To easily unmold the popsicles once hard, run them under warm water for a few seconds.
Add more or less ginger according to your personal taste. You can also add more honey if you need more sweetness, or omit the honey for a lower-sugar version.
