If you’ve been following along, you know that I’m a huge advocate of cooking healthy food from scratch for my family. Cooking from scratch is good for your health and can make you save money! Every single day, I take the time to cook 3 meals for my family, but I find snacks harder to plan and we often end up just grabbing something to eat from the fridge or the pantry. Most days, our to-go choices are fruit and yogurt, but I like to have a variety of nutritious healthy snacks on hand for when I or my son get hungry between meals.

Homemade gelatin is one of my favourite snacks! It’s delicious, filling, and has a lot of health benefits. You can make gelatin with pretty much any kind of fruit and you can even add other ingredients (yogurt, kefir) to add variety and adapt your recipes to every season.

Making gelatin is so easy and you can store it in the fridge for a ready-to-go snack for you and your kids! We even have gelatin for breakfast sometimes, or to complement a meal and treat ourselves with a little dessert. I like using a glass storage container with lid (like this one) as a mold for the gelatin for easy storage. As an alternative, you can use single portion molds, or pour the gelatin in a larger container and cut it into cubes or shapes once set. This is also a great and fun activity to do with your kids!

What is gelatin and why is it good for you?

Gelatin is a protein derived from collaged and is naturally present in some animal products such as skin, tendons, ligaments and bones. Modern diets typically lack gelatin as most people don’t consume these animals’ parts anymore, so adding gelatin powder to your recipes is an easy way to increase gelatin consumption. Gelatin powder is usually derived from beef or pig bones. For maximum health benefits, it’s important to choose a good quality natural gelatin that is all-natural and made from pastured animals (like this one).

The unique combination of amino acids found in gelatin comes with many health benefits. Gelatin plays a critical role in joint health and brain function and can improve skin appearance, and gut and bone health. Consuming gelatin can also help sustain a healthy metabolism, promote restful sleep and improve digestion. For all these reasons, gelatin is a very healthy addition to the diet of growing children and can help support their overall health. Read more about the benefits of gelatin here and find ideas on how to include more gelatin in your diet with traditional foods such as bone broth in this post.
