Nothing beats a frozen treat in a hot summer day! These healthy homemade creamy popsicles combine the natural sweetness of bananas and the creamy texture of avocados. Full of vitamins, minerals, proteins and healthy fats, these popsicles will soon be your favorite summer snack.

Ingredients choice for these banana and avocado creamy popsicles

If the winter is the time for baking healthy treats, the summer is for refreshing snacks. Nothing beats a homemade popsicle enjoyed while relaxing in the backyard or while running around in the grass.

Homemade popsicles are also the perfect way to reintegrate nutrients. You can “hide” superfoods in your popsicles to make your kids eat them (great for picky eaters!).

For these creamy popsicles I combined bananas, avocados and yogurt, which give these frozen treats a perfect combination of taste and texture.

Let me tell you a thing. We don’t usually eat bananas or avocados a whole lot. You may wonder why, as these foods are usually labeled as healthy. Bananas, as you might know, are a very sugary fruit. One average banana contains about 30 grams of carbohydrates (including about 15 grams of sugar). To give you an idea, 1 cup of sliced banana has the same sugar content as 3 cups of sliced strawberries! One of these popsicles, however, contains about 1/3 banana, so ~10 grams of carbohydrates and ~5 grams of sugar. These popsicles also balance the sugar out with proteins and fats, therefore making a much more balanced (and healthy) snack than a banana itself.

The other “problems” with bananas and avocados are that they are tropical fruit and they are often not sustainably grown. For both health and sustainability reasons we typically chose local and in-season products. As a general rule, choosing fruit that is organic and Fairtrade can help making more sustainable choices.

Nutrient-rich foods

Despite these cons, bananas and avocados are both nutrient-rich fruits that can be beneficial to our health. Yogurt adds extra beneficial properties.

Let’s see, specifically, the nutrients found in these creamy popsicles ingredients!

Bananas: source of carbohydrates, fibers, vitamins B, Vit C, magnesium, potassium, manganese.

Avocados: source of unsaturated fats, vitamins B, Vit C, Vit E, Vit K, folate, magnesium, potassium.

Yogurt: source of proteins, saturated fats, vitamins B (including B12), calcium, phosphorus, probiotics.

All combined, these ingredients make these popsicles a great source of macro- and micro-nutrients. In particular, the mineral content makes these frozen treats a great way to replace what can be lost through sweating in those hot summer days! They are also great for bone, muscle and gut health!

When selecting the ingredients for these popsicles, chose organic and Fairtrade fruit that is ripe. As for the yogurt, I like using my delicious homemade Bulgarian yogurt, but store-bought yogurt will work just fine. Chose a full-fat yogurt, possibly organic and from grass-fed animals. Also check the ingredients list and make sure there are no additives!

Finally, I like “hiding” some collagen power to many of my baked or frozen snacks to boost the protein content and add all the benefits of collagen for me and my son (read more about collagen here). My to-go choice of collagen is Vital protein collagen from grass-fed, pasture-raised beef.

Notes

You can use milk or water for these popsicles, depending on your personal preference. Full-fat milk will make the popsicles extra creamy and add extra proteins and fats. You can even use 1/2 cup of coffee if you’re making this recipe for grown-ups.

Even though these popsicles are delicious with just bananas and avocados, you can add some extra flavor adding some cocoa powder or natural vanilla extract.

Collagen powder is also optional, but add some extra proteins and boosts the gut-healthy (and all the other) benefits of these popsicles.

I like using stainless steel popsicle molds. To easily remove the popsicles from their molds once frozen, place them in some warm water for a few seconds.
